Scotland - Belgium - France... and beyond
On the 4th August 1914 Britain declared war on Germany and in doing so entered ‘the war to end all wars’. With no conscripted army to rely on Britain now urgently needed to recruit men into her armed forces. Led by Lord Kitchener the country undertook a ferocious recruitment campaign to compel men to fight for King and country. Within just a month, thousands of men had volunteered and the first of many "pals battalions" were created. These battalions encouraged young men to sign up with friends, relatives or work mates so they could fight shoulder to shoulder together and ultimately, for many, to die together.
